While exploring the very purpose of life on this earth, and in this mysterious
universe, everyone gets confused. We have no theory, whether in religion or in science
which can provide any precise answer to it. Ignorance of Nature’s ways led people in
ancient times to invent Gods to deities over every aspect of human life. There is a need
to understand the intricate relationship of a human being with this Earth and the
universe.

The universe is in unity, an interacting and genetically related community, bound
together in an inseparable relationship in space and time. In the same way, the unity of
planet earth with each being (living or non-living) of the planet. This unique system is
profoundly implicated in the existence and the functioning of all kinds of living or non-
living beings. The whole universe has a violent as well as a harmonious aspect.
Construction and destruction consistently keep on going in the larger arc of
development in the universe and so on the planet earth.
The earth, within the solar system, is a self-emergent, self-propagating, self-nourishing,
, self-governing, self-healing, and self-fulfilling community. All the life systems on it are interdependent and must integrate into their functioning. The human emerges within the life system of the earth. Universe has blessed humans with a special mode of conscious self-awareness. Since human infants are helpless at birth, if the first human had somehow appeared on earth as an infant, it would not have survived. This is humanity’s first thinking of evolution. They must, therefore, have evolved from other species which implies a very close relationship of humans with some other living being.

In his journey, from Domestication to transition to village life, to classical civilizations,
the rise of cities, development of religious expression through rituals and architecture,
creation of society to celebrations of social functions, the invention of writing and related
technologies, centralized governments, then the augmentation of scientific,
technological and industrial phase, and finally the violent exploitation and plundering of
Earth have taken place. The functioning of Earth is profoundly altered in its chemical,
biological, and geological system and structures. The atmosphere and water are
extremely polluted, the soil eroded, and toxic waste accumulates, resulting in the
mystique of the Earth vanishes from human consciousness.
Einstein once said, “God does not play dice with the universe” to which Neil Bohr
replied, ” Please stop telling God, what to do.” Both represent a common search for
knowledge about the origin and nature of the cosmos and our relationship with it. The
principle of science is that truth is not a destination, but a ceaseless quest. Whereas
Religion is ” the most powerful means of mobilizing the human conscience to serve the
common good. Both of them have lost their meaning and their veracity.
William Wordsworth described sympathy in the context of humans connect with Nature.
Sympathies keep us logged on to the cosmos, a source of incessant joy, and provide
fullness to life. When they dry up, there’s an acute feeling of want that nothing seems to
satiate. He also felt that the industrial revolution and urban order were destroying this
connection with Nature. But today we have crossed all those limits. In the quest for
excellence, we have forgotten the difference between the standard of living and quality
of life. The Standard of living is measured only by economic well-being and prosperity,
whereas the quality of life includes health, happiness, emotional security in addition to
the standard of living.

Research shows that people who chase extrinsic goals, like money, recognition, power,
fame are more anxious, depressed, and dissatisfied in comparison to those people who
value intrinsic goals like close relationships with people, nature, and the surroundings.
Because the basic fundamental of life is interdependence in a close harmony, which
human has left somewhere in the middle of this journey of time.
