The annual Grindadrap has started in the Faroe Islands. This annual hunt is when local fishermen kill hundreds of whales and dolphins for food for the coming year. Environmental activists protest the event annually and this year is no different.

NGO Sea Shepherd has long condemned the practice and did so again when 250 long-finned pilot whales were killed in a hunt. The group calls the annual hunt a “barbarous practice.” The organization called it “the return of the bloody fjords,” because of the blood in the water during the animal slaughter. Fisherman found and killed a large pod off of Sandvid, a shallow fjord.Advertisement
Sea Shepherd France shared on their Facebook page, “This is the first organised “grindadrap” slaughter of 2020, after a halt in hunting to avoid large gatherings due to Covid-19. Sea Shepherd ships may be banned from entering Faroese waters, but each year our volunteers are there to document the ongoing slaughter of dolphins and pilot whales.”
